It has been nearly a year since this petition was launched, but our concerns about the fate of the State Historical Society of Iowa have only grown since then. The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is once again engaged in a misguided campaign for $65 million in Iowa infrastructure funds to transform the State Historical Building in Des Moines into an "Iowa Cultural Center." As this Des Moines Register Op-Ed explains, the DCA's plans pose a grave threat to Iowa history collections and subvert the longstanding mission of the State Historical Society of Iowa. Please call on Governor Branstad and Iowa legislators to give top priority to safeguarding the precious contents of their state’s history before spending tax dollars on marble foyers and slick marketing.
