The Issue

On September 15th, a horrifying incident occurred. Two men, out of desperation to escape continual racism and abuse, reportedly set themselves on fire inside Virginia's Red Onion prison. This desperate act was a last-resort plea for transfer to a different facility after being degraded and physically abused by correctional staff.

The incident is not an isolated case. It reveals the urgent need for an immediate investigation into not only this particular case but also the recurring incidents of self-harm and the appalling conditions leading to these tragedies at Red Onion Prison. There is an urgent call for transparency regarding the use of solitary confinement and the prison’s mental health policies.

Furthermore, we demand more than the bare minimum for incarcerated individuals; we seek humane treatment and respect for their basic rights and dignity. It's not just about these two, it’s about the abuse of human rights happening behind the iron bars that continues to push incarcerated folks past their breaking point.

Everyone deserves empathy, respect, and fair treatment, even those who are incarcerated. Please make your voice heard by signing this petition and standing up for those who are vulnerable and disenfranchised by the horrific practices being allowed by the Virginia Department of Corrections.

 Together, we can ignite change.
