The Issue

Mount Prospect police helped Texas track a woman for a self-managed abortion. That’s not just outrageous—it’s illegal in Illinois.

After Roe v. Wade was overturned, Illinois passed a law to protect people seeking abortions and immigrants from being tracked or prosecuted by out-of-state police. But Mount Prospect ignored that. They gave Texas access to license plate data anyway, in a case explicitly related to abortion. The woman wasn’t even in Illinois.

It didn’t stop there. State officials uncovered more than 260 cases this year alone where Mount Prospect shared data in immigration-related searches—also against the law.

This isn’t just about one suburb. It's about whether Illinois lives up to its promise of being a safe place in a post-Roe America. It's about whether we let other states use our roads, our cameras, and our police to enforce their bans.

Chicago and communities across Illinois deserve better. We are calling on Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Governor JB Pritzker to hold every police department accountable. Departments that break the law must lose access to this powerful surveillance technology—and lose state funding if they continue to violate Illinois protections.

Our state is meant to be a shield. But right now, it's being turned into a tool of punishment.
