Investigate and stop inhumane trapping of squirrels in Idaho
The Issue
I belong to a large network of volunteers who tirelessly love and care for our Idaho Wildlife. This petition is in regards to the cruel and inhumane practice of trapping then caging, several squirrels in a space that is entirely too small and leaving them for up to three days without food, or water. This is different than just using a live trap to catch one at a time. Its happening right here in our Boise Community and its heartbreaking that these innocent creatures are suffering at the hands of humans. These squirrels are enduring extreme stress and pain, all while being deprived of their basic necessities. Being trapped like this, and for such a long period of time (up to 72 hrs), causes them so much stress they thrash and bash themselves and eachother, trying to get out.
In Idaho, where wildlife coexists closely with human communities, it is our responsibility to ensure that the treatment of these animals reflects our values of compassion and care. Current trapping and caging of the animals, as witnessed in this case, are not only inhumane but also violate basic ethical standards. According to the Humane Society, animals kept without food or water suffer from severe dehydration and stress, leading to potential death from exposure or starvation.
The lack of regulation and oversight in this area can lead to widespread suffering and cruelty. According to Idaho Fish and Game, there are regulations and guidelines that must be followed, yet those responsible for these inhumane practices often operate unchecked and without consequences. Studies from reputable wildlife organizations indicate that humane and non-lethal alternatives exist, such as exclusion methods and habitat modification, which can effectively and ethically manage squirrel populations without causing undue harm.
We urge the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, alongside local law enforcement, to investigate these incidents promptly and enforce existing laws to prevent further cruelty. It is essential to establish strict accountability measures and promote awareness about humane wildlife management practices. By doing so, we can ensure squirrels and other wildlife are treated with respect and dignity, preserving the balance of our ecosystems.
What we are asking:
1. Investigate all reports made
2. Enforce existing cruelty and wildlife laws
3. Clarify and strengthen rules requiring humane treatment of trapped wildlife
Idahoans deserve to know their agencies are responding and wildlife deserves humane treatment. Join me in calling for an immediate investigation into these practices. Let us protect the wildlife in our state and set a precedent for humane and ethical treatment.....Such as shortening the allowed duration of time kept caged, from 72hrs to 24 hrs. Please sign this petition to show your support and require action against the inhumane trapping/caging of squirrels in Idaho. People that do this tend to escalate and its not unreasonable to believe it may soon be our neighborhood small pets we find in these cages...
