Invest in Our Youth: Expand Youth Support Programs in Jane and Finch!
The Issue
Help us get recognition from Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, Toronto City Council, and the City's Social Development, Finance and Administration Division.
Our demands: Increase long-term funding for free after-school, recreational, and mentorship programs, expand accessible youth mental health and counselling services, create more paid employment, job training, and leadership opportunities for local youth, extend youth program hours, including evenings and weekends, and involve young people in planning services.
The youth in the Jane and Finch community, especially those in the Driftwood community, must be provided equal opportunities to succeed, feel safe, and access the support they need. There are a few useful youth groups in the community. More investment is needed to ensure programs are available to everyone.
In the Annual Report of the Jane/Finch Centre for 2025-2026, youth programs were one of the priorities of the community mentioned by 29% of those surveyed, as well as mental health services, which were also cited by 29%. The issue of employment was also important, since it was mentioned by 32% of the respondents.
Organizations like The Spot Youth Centre and BGC Jane & Finch Club already offer mentoring, recreation programs, education help, and a secure environment for the youths. The Jane/Finch Centre indicated that 2,066 youth used the services of The Spot Youth Centre from 2024 to 2025. This highlights the need for youth services in the community.
Difficulties surrounding employment, mental health, poverty, and inequality of opportunities persist among youth. Increasing current services will help in reducing such obstacles and giving youth the chance to grow in terms of self-confidence and networking.
We are asking Toronto City Council to provide more funding for youth programs in Jane and Finch, such as Driftwood. More recreational opportunities, mental wellness, employment training, mentoring and community spaces are required.
In signing this petition, you would be contributing to creating a community where all young people can feel appreciated, nurtured, and enabled to excel. Investing in the youth today is investing in our community tomorrow.
