Introduction of 'psychological counselling cell' for students at colleges & universities.
The Issue
With rising rate of suicide in India , specially among the students and young adults of 17-35 years old, the concern for mental health and ways to prevent suicide has also increased to some extent. But it's not enough. Even now mental health is considered a taboo. People don't talk about it, they don't try and evaluate it. If we do a proper deep dive we will find the cause to be very simple. It's lack of awareness and education about mental health issues and lack of peer support or unawareness of how to support someone going through a hard time. Moreover in today's world when people are so much exposed to everything happening globally, in such a way that it effects our mentality which may give rise to insecurity, depression, resentment ,eventually leading to one's unwilling to carry on with life. So, we need to take some action to protect everyone from the feeling that suicide is the only way.
Through this petition we would like to request Government of India, Education and Human Resource Department as well as Health Department and all the authorities concerned for implementation of mandatory psychological counseling session at every educational institutions, specially colleges and universities. So that students have a safe space in case they need some assistance or guidance regarding their mental health. In this competitive world, where everything is a competition, it's easy for students and young adults to suffer from the grasp of depression, anxiety, panic, suicidal thoughts, dissociation etc. Taking this step of introducing a psychological counseling cell in higher educational institutions for students, would open a window and would start a conversation about mental health and it's importance among people. A student can impact a family, and a family in turn a society and eventually in a larger scale the entire country.
Generalising the approach towards a psychologist, would develop a conversation among the family through the students, and if taken seriously, it'd help spreading much awareness and remove the taboo.
It is high time to act now as we have already lost many future talents and great citizens to suicide. Reportedly 170,000 lives are lost annually to suicide across India. Measures should be taken to prevent this increasing numbers.
