The Issue

As someone living with photosensitive epilepsy, I know firsthand the challenges posed by environments filled with flashing lights. For individuals like me, the prospect of enjoying a simple night out with friends or family is fraught with anxiety and potential danger due to strobe lights in clubs, which often trigger seizures.

This isn't just an issue for those with epilepsy; people who suffer from migraines, sensory processing disorders, or other neurological conditions are also adversely affected by strobe lighting. It's time we embrace inclusivity and create fun, safe environments that everyone can enjoy.

Strobe-free club nights would provide individuals with sensory sensitivities the freedom and opportunity to participate in social activities without fear of adverse effects. By encouraging clubs to host nights without strobe lighting, we can make nightlife more inclusive and accessible.

According to Epilepsy Action, over 600,000 people in the UK have epilepsy, and approximately 3% of them have photosensitive epilepsy that can be triggered by flashing lights. Migraines affect 1 in 7 people in the UK, with many sufferers citing flashing lights as a primary trigger. The numbers are clear: strobe lighting is not just a minor inconvenience—it's a significant barrier to well-being and inclusion for many.

By introducing strobe-free nights, we can transform clubbing experiences across the UK. Clubs can replace strobe lights with alternative atmospheric effects such as ambient lighting or visual projections that do not pose health risks. Not only will this create a welcoming environment for those with specific health needs, but it will also showcase a commitment to diversity and accessibility within the nightlife industry.

We call on club owners, managers, and local councils across the UK to adopt this initiative and set regular strobe-free nights at their venues. This small change could make a huge difference in the lives of thousands, ensuring everyone can enjoy a night out without fear.

Please sign this petition to support the introduction of strobe-free club nights in the UK. Together, we can make our nightlife more inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
