Halal Meals Petition – Update
The petition calling for halal meal provision has now received over 200 signatures. We sincerely appreciate every person who has taken the time to sign and show their support. This encouraging response suggests that halal meal provision may be a need shared by a wider section of our local community.
The purpose of the petition has always been to encourage a constructive conversation about choice, diversity and inclusion. We are grateful for the support and engagement of the school’s leadership team, who have listened to the concerns raised and have been willing to discuss the matter openly.
Following our recent meeting, the school provided an update regarding the catering information and menus previously shared by email. The information came from the external catering provider that supplies schools across the London Borough of Havering. Unfortunately, an error was not identified before the information was circulated. Once the issue was recognised, it was clarified and corrected in a follow-up communication.
We have also been advised that the school has been actively pursuing improvements to the existing canteen facilities over the last five years. The Headteacher is advocating for the Local Authority to work with the school to identify a practical and effective way forward, including the potential upgrading and remodelling of the current facilities. Once this is achieved, it could enable a wider range of dietary requirements and meal choices to be prepared safely on site.
We understand that further communication will be provided once the school and the relevant authorities have more information and are in a position to confirm the next steps. We appreciate the Headteacher’s ongoing efforts and recognise that updates can only be shared once the details have been properly established.
The school has also advised that any parent who would like to discuss halal meal provision or raise questions about this matter is welcome to contact the school directly by email. We encourage parents to engage respectfully and constructively so that their views and concerns can be heard.
There has also been some encouraging news from another local school within our borough. Following the attention this petition has brought to the issue, the school has reached out to its parents with a survey to establish whether halal meal provision is something their school community would want or need. This is a fantastic and positive step towards understanding the needs of local families and encouraging schools to listen to their communities. We hope this will help support further conversations and demonstrate the value of working together to explore inclusive meal options.
We welcome this progress and hope it can provide a realistic, long-term solution for our school community. Access to suitable and nutritious meals during the school day supports children’s health, concentration, learning and overall wellbeing.
We kindly ask that all discussion surrounding the petition remains respectful, constructive and open-minded. The petition is not intended to create division or encourage dismissive or inappropriate comments about anyone’s dietary choices, beliefs or preferences. All of our voices matter!
The request is simply to explore the possibility of providing a halal meal option on one day of the five-day school week. This would give children who follow a halal diet the opportunity to access a suitable meal alongside their peers. Although vegetarian options are available, they may not meet every family’s dietary requirements or provide the same variety of choice available to other children throughout the week.
Our school community includes children and families from many different backgrounds, and this diversity should be valued. Ultimately, the petition seeks a small but meaningful increase in choice and inclusion, ensuring that children with different dietary requirements feel equally considered and supported within their school community.
Thank you once again to everyone who has signed, shared and supported this petition. Every signature, conversation and positive step helps bring us closer to understanding the needs of our community and working towards a solution that benefits our children. ❤️
