Introduce a “VETO” Option on Ballots for UK Elections

The Issue

The current "lead, follow, or get-out-of-the-way" electoral model is undemocratic and makes it difficult for voters to have a meaningful say in elections. It puts far too much power into the hands of political parties at the expense of voters.

If the major parties stop operating in good faith or become incompetent; it’s very difficult for voters to reassert control, in effect, parties can become feral and operate without democratic oversight with possibly devastating impact.

Confidence in Political Parties

The bar chart shows, that for nearly two decades at minimum, voters in most of the world are forced to elect political parties in which they have little to no confidence. Is this really democracy?

Can democracy be said to exist without majority consent or confidence, at least sometimes?

Support this petition to introduce an option to veto (ie reject) legislative elections. It makes the undemocratic model democratic, by introducing consent into the electoral process. If the majority choose to veto, then that constituency's election must be re-run, with no stipulation on the number of re-runs and original candidates standing again. Using a veto is not necessarily rejecting candidates, but the capacity of the election itself to provide adequate representation.

It's our role and duty as voters that we reject elections that will not reasonably guarantee us adequate representation. Holding out for a candidate in which we have confidence is the first and necessary step in maximising the common good. As voters, we all share the common desire to better our lives; making voters sovereign will harness that that desire and make help make it a reality.

Democracy works, not because voters are always right, but because we have the greatest incentive to correct our mistakes as we live with the consequences of our decisions!

Even before it reaches a majority, the veto will provide critical information on the level and locations of public dissatisfaction to show where policies are failing and the incentive to improve them. You cannot have consistently good governance without this essential measure. Voters are the most under-utilised resource to help deliver prosperity for all.

The veto option is a simple and costless way for voters to regain control over their own country and ensure our elected representative put interests of voters above all else. The sooner we rid ourselves of the ghastly “lead, follow or get-out-of-the-way” electoral system, the sooner we can put ourselves on the path to maximise the common good.

Sign the petition to make voters and the UK great and prosperous again!
