Introduce a new traffic system at Stanton Island and Chalons Way after a fatality.

Introduce a new traffic system at Stanton Island and Chalons Way after a fatality.
The Issue
On 11th December 2025, a tragic incident occurred at the Stanton Island and Chalons Way roundabouts in Ilkeston. An elderly man was hospitalised in a life-threatening condition following a collision on a mobility scooter with a Van. The elderly man who was in a serious condition has sadly died on the 12th December 2025 flowing this fatal collision. This fatality was not an isolated incident but rather a harsh reminder of the persistent dangers that these roundabouts pose to both pedestrians and drivers alike. For many years, both ends of the bypass have been notorious for congestion and accidents, constantly endangering lives and obstructing the flow of traffic.
Ilkeston’s Stanton Island and Chalons Way roundabouts have long been points of concern for the community. Despite numerous accidents and incidents causing injuries and disruptions, little has been done to address these hazards. Traffic congestion is an everyday issue, with vehicles often blocking both ends of the bypass, creating a hazardous and chaotic environment.
I believe it's time for a change that will save lives. Implementing a new, safer traffic system is not merely a necessity—it's an urgent need. This system should include well-designed pedestrian crossings, improved signage, clearer road markings, and possibly traffic lights that could help regulate the flow of vehicles and reduce congestion, thereby preventing further accidents.
There are various models of traffic systems across the UK that have successfully decreased accidents and improved traffic flow that can serve as inspiration. Borough councils successfully implementing these solutions have shown a reduction in accident statistics by as much as 30% in comparable areas.
I urge the local council and traffic management authorities in Ilkeston to take immediate action to prevent another serious accident and fatalities at these hazardous junctions.
By listening to, and working with, the community, a comprehensive traffic management plan can be developed that will make these roundabouts and junctions safer for everyone to use.
The time to act is now, before another accident occurs and more lives are affected. Please sign this petition to ensure the safety and well-being of our loved ones and neighbours. Together, we can make Ilkeston a safer place for all.
I am hoping to get as many signatures as possible so that I can approach the Council and Traffic Management Team for them to start the process of ensuring these junctions become safer for pedestrians and drivers..
Please share this petition with you friends and family and let's ensure that there are no more fatalities at these junctions.
Thanks In advance for your support.
Regards,
JJ Tait.
