The Issue

The Category A-listed Mackintosh Tearooms stand proudly in the heart of Glasgow. They are a living testament to our city’s rich cultural tapestry and architectural brilliance. As documented in recent media, a threat is now posed by a soon to open vape and electronics shop next door.

Our fear is palpable. The Union Corner fire is a fresh wound in Glasgows memory. The relentless blaze, fueled by lithium-ion batteries gutted beloved local landmarks, pushing families out of their homes and businesses out of their premises. The risk is not hypothetical – it is frighteningly real. A fire could quickly spread from this high-risk retail unit, reducing the tearooms and surrounding heritage assets to ashes.

In response to this threat, we urge the Scottish Parliament to establish a national licensing framework for vape retailers akin to the rigorous standards upheld for alcohol sales. This scheme should empower Glasgow City Council to exercise discretion in approving new licenses, particularly where they would infringe upon or endanger heritage assets that demand preservation.

Moreover, we appeal to both the private landlord and their letting agents to reconsider their lease arrangements with this high-risk shop. By prioritizing the safeguarding of our shared cultural heritage, they can choose to align with the noble objectives of the Sauchiehall Street Heritage District rather than undermining them for short-term gain.

Additionally, unity and adherence to established signage rules and aesthetic guidelines are crucial in maintaining the historical ambiance of our urban landscape. Retail fronts in protected districts must conform to these standards, ensuring respect for both public safety and cultural heritage.

By signing this petition, you stand with every Glaswegian who cherishes our history and wishes to protect it. Demand that decision-makers act now before irreversible harm is done. Let us secure the future of our heritage assets for generations to come. Please add your signature today and help preserve the irreplaceable tapestry of Glasgow's past and present.

Many thanks, Ashley.

Ashley Rawson, The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society and Garnethill Community Council.
