Today, I experienced a terrifying situation that no one commuting by train in the UK should ever have to endure. While travelling on a CrossCountry train, I found myself amid dangerous levels of overcrowding. In our carriage alone, there were at least 60 passengers more than there were seats, resulting in an almost unthinkable scenario where nobody could move freely. I shudder to imagine the tragic consequences that could have occurred had there been a fire or another emergency; the potential for a deadly crowd crush was disturbingly real.

Our trains are the backbone of national connectivity, relied upon by millions of people each day for safe transit across Britain—from families visiting loved ones to individuals commuting to work to contribute to the economy. Yet, currently, too many of these journeys are overshadowed by the risk of overcrowding, which compromises both safety and comfort.

Statistics show a steady rise in rail passengers, with demand often surpassing the available seating capacity. According to data from the Office of Rail and Road, in the past decade alone, passenger numbers have soared, yet the infrastructure and regulations seem to lag alarmingly behind. It is evident that without intervention, this predicament will only worsen, leading to further incidents that put lives at risk.

I propose a practical and necessary solution: introduce a mandatory carriage capacity limit on all UK trains. Establishing an enforceable limit that prioritises health and safety will prevent tragedies and raise the standard of travel, ensuring that everyone has a right to safe and comfortable journeys. Additionally, investment in more carriages during peak times and clearer communication of carriage capacities could further alleviate these dangerous situations.

This is a call to action for railway companies and The Department for Transport to uphold commuters' safety by swiftly implementing these measures. Let us put passenger safety first and make our trains a reliable means of travel.
