Intervene to Stop Unjust Violence against Students in Bangladesh

La causa

The cry of a heartbroken community comes from Bangladesh. Young, ambitious minds who should be at our universities and offices, shaping their futures, are instead marching in protest and facing lethal retaliation from the military. The issue at hand is a response to a deeply unfair law change that is jeopardizing their futures, an issue personal to my heart as I see these young lives being extinguished simply for demanding a basic right - a fair opportunity to education and employment.

Yet, it is not the protests that are the most alarming, though their very need is a heartbreaking testimony to the state of affairs. It's the violent and ruthless response from the military to these peaceful protesters that takes our breath away. Innocent students and young people have lost their lives, just for exercising their fundamental human right to express dissatisfaction with their government, granted by Articles 9,10 and 11 of the Human Rights Act. The right to peaceful protest, the right to freedom of expression, and the right to freedom of association are being trampled upon, with tragic consequences.

The pressure for change must be an international effort and we, confined by our borders, call for the intervention of the United Nations. Only a collective effort can stop this injustice. We owe this to the ambitious youth of Bangladesh, to them whose dreams have become nightmares. Therefore, we plead, amplify our voices until they shake the halls of the United Nations so that they intervene and bring a halt to this disastrous internal conflict. Please, add your signature to our call for justice, for a brighter future for Bangladesh's youth, and for the respect of fundamental human rights.
