AI signage trial starts on Michelago to Bredbo 13km stretch of the Monaro Highway

What is happening?
An innovative technology using artificial intelligence (AI) is being trialled along a section of the Monaro
Highway in NSW. The system uses thermal and CCTV-type cameras linked to an AI model trained to detect animals. When wildlife is detected on or near the road, the system will activate smart advisory signage, providing real-time electronic warnings to drivers. Currently the signage is designed to deliver prominent alerts to help reduce collisions and improve safety outcomes.

Comment - While it is innovative and a good start it does not get the wildlife away from oncoming vehicles and may become less affective over time as travellers become habituated to the signs as they set their vehicles to cruise at 100km an hour.  We are asking that Transport NSW go a step further and have the AI signage identify the species and make a predator silhouette and/or sound to frighten the wildlife away until the traffic has past. This is something that they have yet to trial and if it worked it could revolutionise wildlife safety on high impact country roads.
