Hi all. Just an update to say we have some progress on the ongoing petition.
Further to the support from the local member for Eden Monaro Steve Whan MP and the federal member for Eden Monaro Kristy McBain MP we now have support from the office of the minster for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison MP and Transport NSW who support taking the matter further in an approach to the ACT Government Minister for City and Government Services in the ACT - Tara Cheyne MLA through the NSW Cross Border Commissioners office.
At the moment Transport NSW are looking at options they can put forward to try to gain ACT support for the 35km section of the Monaro Highway that is within the ACT and advise they expect to get back to me shortly.
We are seeking to gain support for the possibility of establishing a shared interest of using the Monaro Highway as an example of how a major highway can be made safer for travellers and wildlife and how it could be achieved.
Our initial inclination is to request that hard physical fencing be placed at overpasses at river and creek crossing points where wombats habituate to direct them under the road instead of over it. Additionally we would like to see a comprehensive test of 100km an hour virtual fencing designed with a variety of light and sound configurations (predator outlines & noises) in order to properly deter specific species of kangaroos and wallabies.
Once established that the technology is effective we would like to see the entire stretch of highway between Canberra and Cooma set up as a test case with the possibility of expansion along other road networks with similar wildlife issues in NSW and the rest of Australia.
Meanwhile the winter onslaught is beginning and we are starting to see more deceased wildlife accumulate on the Monaro Highway with the increased traffic.
If you would like to support this action further please contact the office of Jenny Aitchison MP NSW minister for Roads and Regional transport and/or the ACT Government Minister for City and Government Services in the ACT - Tara Cheyne MLA through their contact portals on their websites and request action on this issue.
Special thanks to those that have promoted the petition through donations through the petition website on change.org, such support has been invaluable.
Drive safe and thanks for supporting the petition. We now have 3789 supporters.
