The Issue

For years, residents and local community members have raised urgent concerns about the dangerous intersection of Beach Blvd and Eastport Dr. Tragically, those fears have now been realized.

On September 11, 2026, 23-year-old Connor Opdam lost his life in a devastating collision at this very intersection. Connor was a deeply loved son, brother, friend, and colleague whose sudden and unexpected passing has left a heartbroken community grieving. No family should ever have to experience the pain of losing a child or loved one to preventable road infrastructure failures.

The Problem: While the posted speed limit along this stretch is 50 km/h, motorists routinely treat it like a raceway, driving at speeds of 70 km/h or more. Because Eastport Drive is heavily used as a commuter shortcut around the highway, the volume and speed of traffic create an extremely hazardous environment for drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.

While some have suggested a roundabout, community members who know and travel this corridor understand that high-speed commuter traffic would continue to push through unchecked. What this intersection desperately needs is a fully controlled traffic light. A signalized intersection will force vehicles to come to a complete stop, control the excessive speeds, and allow cross-traffic to move safely and in an orderly fashion.

Our Call to Action: We, the undersigned residents, community members, and concerned citizens, call upon the City of Hamilton and local transportation authorities to immediately:

 - Approve and install traffic lights at the intersection of Beach Blvd and Eastport Dr.
Implement immediate traffic-calming measures (such as increased speed enforcement or radar feedback signs) while signal installation is being planned.

 - Conduct a comprehensive traffic safety review of this corridor to protect vulnerable road users and prevent any more lives from being lost.

Please sign and share this petition to honor Connor’s memory, protect our neighborhood, and ensure our streets are safe for everyone.
