The Issue

Like many residents of Caledonia, I enjoy the simple pleasure of walking my dogs through our friendly neighborhood. However, I've discovered that this wholesome activity could become life-threatening due to the rampant speeding from vehicles in our area. I've been nearly hit on more than one occasion. This has ignited within me a deep concern not just for my safety, but for all members of our community—adults, children, and pets.

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) estimates that 9,188 pedestrians died in traffic or non-traffic incidents in the U.S. in 2022. That same year, speeding was a factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities, killing 12,151, or an average of over 33 people on a typical day. It's clear that this is not just a local issue, but a nationwide concern that requires immediate attention.

Caledonia deserves better. For the safety of our community, we request that the local governing body and H.O.A. implement speed humps within our neighborhood. These proven traffic calming measures can greatly decrease the likelihood of accidents caused by speeding. A study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that speed humps reduced vehicle speeds by 13–20% on average [Insurance Institute for Highway Safety].

Let's make Caledonia streets safer. Sign the petition today and take the first step toward preventing unnecessary accidents, injuries, or even fatalities in our community.
