On May 12, 2025, our family was forever changed when my 6-year-old granddaughter tragically lost her life. She was hit by a speeding vehicle on Newland Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. The driver, disregarding the safety of our community, was traveling at a dangerous speed, which led to this heart-wrenching loss.

Speeding is a severe problem in many neighborhoods across Springfield, particularly on the side streets branching from Plainfield Street. These areas are residential, with families, small children, and pedestrians frequently present. Despite the evident risks, drivers continue to speed through these streets, posing a threat to everyone.

To prevent further tragedies and to ensure the safety of our community, we are calling on the city to install speed bumps on these side streets. Speed bumps are a proven method to slow down traffic, reduce accidents, and enhance pedestrian safety. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Transportation, speed bumps can reduce traffic speeds by as much as 35% and reduce collisions by up to 40%.

This measure is crucial for protecting our community's children and residents. We are urging city officials to act now and prioritize the safety and well-being of Springfield's families.
