Install safety measures near Scott Lane Elementary

Install safety measures near Scott Lane Elementary
The Issue

Every school day is a challenge for parents and guardians like me trying to get our kids to Scott Lane Elementary School safely. The intersection of Scott Blvd and Cabrillo Ave is a potential danger zone, as families are forced to take longer, inconvenient routes to reach a designated crosswalk. Going out of our way often makes our kids late for school, a problem that could easily be rectified with the installation of a crosswalk or caution blinking lights at this intersection.
Frequent near misses with reckless drivers who disregard the presence of a school zone make this not just inconvenient but dangerous. The lack of pedestrian safety measures directly in front of the school creates an unsafe environment for children, parents, and sometimes even teachers trying to make their way across the street. No family should have to continually risk their safety for something as ordinary as walking their child to school.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, implementing pedestrian safety measures like crosswalks and flashing lights can significantly reduce accidents and improve driver awareness. In school zones, child pedestrian injury risk is high, yet much can be done to reduce it.
I urge the City of Santa Clara and the Santa Clara Unified School District to prioritize the installation of safety measures—such as a crosswalk or caution lights—at the corner of Scott Blvd. and Cabrillo Ave. This isn't just about convenience; it's about preventing potential accidents and safeguarding the well-being of our children and our community.
Join me in urging the city officials to take immediate action and make this route to school safer for everyone. Please sign this petition to demand the installation of these crucial safety measures now.
