In major cities around the world, public transit systems have already implemented basic safety measures in the form of platform barriers or screen doors. Cities like Tokyo, Paris, and Singapore have installed protective barriers, significantly reducing the risk of fatal accidents and drastically minimizing service interruption due to emergencies. Why should Greater Vancouver, known for its innovation and high standard of living, lag behind on public transit safety?
TransLink, the operator of the Skytrain, has a responsibility to ensure the welfare of all passengers. Evaluating their current operating budget, it is feasible for them to allocate funds toward implementing safety barriers. By doing so, not only can potential tragedies be prevented, but the efficiency and reliability of the system would be improved, benefitting all users of the service.
