Install Safety Barriers at Sherman, MS 3rd Ave. Crossing - DO IT FOR LIZZY!

Install Safety Barriers at Sherman, MS 3rd Ave. Crossing - DO IT FOR LIZZY!
The Issue
DECEMBER 19, 2022 - SEVEN YEAR OLD LIZZY SHEFFIELD LOST HER ENTIRE FAMILY - TED, SHARON AND MAX SHEFFIELD - WHEN THEY WERE STRUCK BY AN ONCOMING TRAIN AT THE DANGEROUS THIRD AVE. CROSSING IN SHERMAN, MISSISSIPPI.
SIX CRASHES AND FIVE DEATHS AT THIS CROSSING IS TOO MANY! IMMEDIATE INSTALLATION OF CROSSING GATES IS NECESSARY TO SAVE LIVES AND PREVENT FUTURE TRAGEDIES.

We, the undersigned, respectfully ask the Town of Sherman, BNSF Railroad Company and the Mississippi Department of Transportation to make the safety of citizens a priority and take whatever measures necessary to make the Third Avenue railroad crossing in Sherman, MS, a safe intersection. The view of oncoming trains for motorists is obstructed and the only solution is the installation of crossing gates. We request the Town of Sherman, BNSF and the MDOT to take the initiative and expedite the installation of crossing gates at the railroad crossing on Third Ave. and remove the foliage blocking the view of motorists.
Due to the angle of the intersection, the metal railroad shed and the foliage near the intersection, there is no clear view for vehicle operators to see an oncoming train and have adequate time to stop or clear the intersection. Barrier gates at this crossing would prevent future crashes, injuries and deaths.
There have been six crashes and five deaths at the Third Ave. crossing, the most recent of which occurred on December 19, 2022 when Ted, Sharon and Max Sheffield were killed and 7 year old Lizzy Sheffield was injured and lost her entire family. The comparison of the safety history of the Third Ave. crossing - which has no crossing arms - with the crossings at First Ave. and Sixth Ave. - which have crossing arms - is very telling. No deaths have occurred at the other two Sherman, MS crossings since crossing arms were installed.
IT IS PAST TIME TO TAKE ACTION IN ORDER TO SAVE LIVES AND SECURE A SAFE FUTURE FOR ALL OF THE PEOPLE OF SHERMAN, MS, AND ALL VEHICLE OPERATORS IN THE AREA OF THE THIRD AVENUE RAILROAD CROSSING.
Respectfully,
The undersigned citizens and the Sheffield Family
