Install safer pedestrian crossings at Merritt and Tuttle Hill Rd in Ypsilanti Township, MI

The Issue

On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the community of Ypsilanti Township, MI faced a tragedy that no family or neighborhood should have to endure. A 14-year-old boy's life was abruptly ended at the intersection of Merritt and Tuttle Rd due to a traffic incident. This heartbreaking event highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures in our area to prevent further tragedies.

The intersection of Merritt and Tuttle Rd is frequented by children, local residents, and visitors, making it crucial to ensure their safety. Currently, the absence of sufficient pedestrian control measures, such as a well-regulated traffic light, poses a significant risk to all who pass through this intersection daily. It's clear that the status quo is not enough to guarantee the safety of pedestrians in Ypsilanti Township.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that intersections with proper pedestrian signaling and controlled crossings can reduce accidents by up to 40%. Installing a traffic light with enhanced pedestrian crossings at this busy intersection would not only ensure the safety of pedestrians, particularly our children, but it would also serve as a proactive step towards protecting all road users.

Addressing this issue requires immediate action from the local authorities. We urge the Ypsilanti Township City Council, Ypsilanti Township Board of Trustees, and the Department of Public Works to prioritize this matter and allocate necessary resources towards installing a traffic light with safer pedestrian crossings at Merritt and Tuttle Hill Rd. By taking this step, we can prevent further loss and ensure the community remains a safe, walkable, and welcoming environment for everyone.

Your support in signing this petition can drive the change we desperately need. Let's work together to safeguard our community and protect our loved ones. Please sign this petition and help make Ypsilanti Township a safer place for all.
