The Issue

It is a regular occurrence that drivers exiting the M6 at Junction 23 on Haydock Island fail to stop at the red light. This dangerous negligence not only attaches significant risk to other road users but also creates a ripple effect of chaos across the junction. As someone who has experienced first-hand the reckless behavior of these drivers, I find it alarming how frequently these incidents occur. Just recently, a truck accelerated in my direction after I was caught in a precarious position behind another truck that had ignored the traffic signal.

This behavior endangers everyone in the vicinity and I believe it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs. Beyond near-miss situations, when longer vehicles get stranded at a red light of a secondary crossing, they block other exits. This blockage leads to severe delays, rising frustration, and road rage among other drivers stuck in the resulting gridlock.

The installation of red light cameras on Haydock Island could act as a crucial deterrence against this illegal and reckless behavior. By enforcing the law, these cameras would encourage drivers to act responsibly, significantly reducing the likelihood of accidents and improving overall traffic flow.

Red light cameras have been proven effective in numerous other locations. Studies show that they can reduce the rate of red-light running significantly – for instance, the Federal Highway Administration in the U.S. found that red light cameras led to a 21% reduction in red light violations.

We need tangible solutions to prevent accidents and ensure that all road users can travel safely. By endorsing the installation of these cameras, we are investing in the everyday well-being of those who traverse this busy interchange.

Let us take immediate action to advocate for the safety of all by signing this petition. Together, we can persuade local authorities and transport agencies to prioritize this urgent traffic safety measure.
