A 15-year-old girl suffered "serious and life-altering injuries" when she was struck by a vehicle outside Lord Byng Secondary School on Jan 30, 2024. As a concerned citizen and parent, I have noticed the heavy pedestrian traffic of students from Lord Byng Secondary School on 16th Ave cross Wallace Street in Vancouver, BC. The absence of a pedestrian light at this location poses a significant safety risk to these young individuals who are simply trying to get to school.

According to Transport Canada, in 2019 alone, there were approximately 15,000 pedestrians injured in traffic-related incidents across the country. While not all these accidents occurred near schools or involved students, it is clear that pedestrian safety is an issue that needs addressing.

By installing a pedestrian light on 16th Ave near Lord Byng Secondary School, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents involving our children. This simple act could potentially save lives and prevent injuries among our most precious population – our kids.
