The Issue

Bogart Drive (Bridgewater NJ) is not just a quiet residential street — it serves as a primary connector route for Bridgewater residents accessing Route 28. As a result, it carries significantly more traffic than a typical neighborhood road, yet lacks the safety infrastructure to match.

Despite a posted speed limit of 25 mph and stop signs, vehicles routinely exceed this limit, particularly at two intersections that have become high-risk zones for our children and neighbors:

  • Bogart Drive & Purcell Road — requires a Three-Way Stop
  • Bogart Drive & Kiser Lane — requires a Four-Way Stop

Why Traffic Has Worsened in Recent Years

The traffic volume on Bogart Drive has increased substantially due to rapid commercial development along Route 28 and the Somerville Circle area. New retail establishments and businesses have drawn more drivers who cut through our residential neighborhood to avoid congestion on main roads. What was once a low-volume street is now a daily shortcut for commuters and shoppers — at speeds that endanger everyone on it.

Our streets are where our children learn to ride bikes, walk to school, and play. The combination of increased cut-through traffic and chronic speeding has made this a genuine safety emergency.

What the Research Says

The Federal Highway Administration has documented that intersections equipped with multi-way stop signs see reductions in overall traffic accidents of up to 68%. For a neighborhood with young children and pedestrians, that number represents lives protected.

Our Specific Request

We call on the Bridgewater Township Engineering Department, Traffic Safety Bureau, and Township Council to:

 1. Conduct a formal MUTCD multi-way stop warrant study at both intersections within 60 days

 2. Present findings to the Township Council in a public session

 3. Proceed immediately with installation upon warrant confirmation

We are not asking for a lengthy process. We are asking for urgency that matches the risk.

Every day without these stop signs is a day our children are in danger. Please act before a tragedy forces your hand.

I want to thank the Bridgewater residents who have shared their concerns regarding traffic on Bogart Drive. I share the concerns that added traffic volume, especially when speed limits are not respected, can be dangerous to pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers. I would also like to provide an update on the actions that I have taken. I have made the Bridgewater Township administration aware of the concerns on Bogart Drive and requested an investigation into whether a change to the traffic patterns at the intersections along Bogart Drive are warranted. I want to assure residents that their concerns have been heard and are being taken seriously. Andrew Bucko Council Vice President Bridgewater Township
