Install more cameras on NIU campus
The Issue
Northern Illinois University (NIU) in DeKalb has seen a growing increase in electric scooter usage as students rely on them for fast, affordable, and eco-friendly transportation across campus. However, with this rise has come an alarming increase in scooter thefts — leaving students without transportation and facing unexpected financial burdens. To protect students and their property, NIU must take proactive steps to address this issue.
One effective and proven solution is the installation of additional security cameras in areas where scooters are commonly parked. Visible cameras act as a strong deterrent to theft, significantly reducing the likelihood of property crimes. In the event a theft does occur, recorded footage can provide valuable evidence to identify suspects and support campus police efforts.
Scooters are more than just convenience — for many students, they are essential for getting to class, work, and daily activities. Losing one can disrupt academic and personal responsibilities, and replacement costs can be hundreds to thousands of dollars. With the rising popularity of scooters, it is crucial that NIU evolves its safety infrastructure to support current student needs.
This petition calls on NIU administration to install more security cameras near bike racks, scooter parking areas, residence hall entrances, academic buildings, and other high-traffic zones. Doing so will not only help reduce scooter thefts but also strengthen overall campus safety and student confidence.
Sign this petition to urge NIU to protect students’ property and promote a safer, more secure campus by installing additional surveillance cameras to prevent electric scooter thefts. Together, we can help keep Huskies moving forward — safely.
