We are a community in mourning. Recently, we lost two teenage children in accidents on Highway 40. These were not isolated incidents - several people we know have run off the side of the mountain on this road. The lack of guardrails along Highway 40, particularly down the mountainous stretches, is a safety concern that has cost us dearly.

Highway 40 is an essential route for many residents in Dutton, Jackson County, AL. However, its current state puts drivers at risk every day. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rural roads like ours account for approximately half of all traffic fatalities despite having less traffic volume compared to urban areas.

The installation of guardrails can significantly reduce these risks by preventing vehicles from running off the road or crossing into oncoming traffic lanes during accidents. A study by The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that guardrails reduced fatal cross-median crashes by almost 90%.

We cannot afford more losses due to inadequate safety measures on our roads. We call upon our local government and transportation authorities to prioritize installing guardrails along dangerous sections of Highway 40.
