The Issue

Dylan's Roar is on a mission to create more inclusive spaces for children with autism in our local communities. As a parent of a wonderful child with autism, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges they face on a daily basis when attempting to communicate their needs, especially in public spaces. Imagine a world where every child could express themselves no matter their communication abilities.

This is why I started a non-profit called Dylan's Roar. One of our goals is to advocate for the installation of Community Communication Boards in all schools and public parks in our region. Communication Boards are tools that include pictures, symbols, words, or a combination that enable non-verbal children to communicate effectively what they feel, need, or want. These boards not only facilitate better communication for children with autism but also foster inclusivity and understanding within the community.

According to the Stats Canada, about 1 in 50 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many of these children are non-verbal or have difficulty with traditional communication methods. A Communication Board can be a bridge to understanding and connection, offering a sense of independence and empowerment to these children.

Installing these boards is an actionable and effective step towards a more inclusive society. Some communities have already benefited from introducing these boards, reporting enhanced communication and overall satisfaction from families and school staff alike. These resources are accessible, easy to use, and have shown to significantly improve the school and park experiences for children with autism.

To bring about this positive change, we urge the local government, school boards, and park management authorities to prioritize the inclusion of Communication Boards in our public spaces. It's a small investment that can make a world of difference for many families and contribute significantly toward building an inclusive community environment.

Join us in making our communities more inclusive by signing this petition. Let's ensure that all children, regardless of their communication abilities, have the means to express themselves fully and freely in our schools and parks. Together, we can make a difference.
