Install Bat-Friendly Lighting on the Path from Aaron's Hill to Godalming Train Station
The Issue
I am a resident of Ockford Park, and I, along with many others, frequently use the path that connects our community (including the Aaron's Hill area) to the Godalming train station. This path is currently pitch black and poses a significant safety risk to all who travel it - particularly women, girls, and the elderly. The darkness is exacerbated by the surrounding forest area which further limits visibility.
We are aware that artificial illumination disrupts local wildlife, with bats being particularly affected as they are sensitive to artificial light. However, there are bat-friendly lights available that can provide necessary illumination without disturbing the ecosystem. The type of bat-friendly light source (luminaires) now preferred by local authorities are light-emitting diodes (LEDs) because they are narrow beams able to be accurately controlled avoiding unnecessary light pollution-affected areas where light is not needed.
Installing such lighting would significantly improve safety while preserving our local environment.
In November 2023, a survey of Surrey residents revealed that *1 in 4 women (and 1 in 5 men)* have experienced street harassment or unwelcome attention in the last 12 months, as Surrey partners come together to call for a STOP to harassment. See link here: https://rb.gy/34rs1w
By signing this petition, we will be supporting safer commutes for residents while protecting our local wildlife in Godalming. Please sign this petition today and help us illuminate our path in an eco-friendly way!
