The Issue

Every day, I make the journey on foot across South Parkside Drive S. in Lethbridge, Alberta near Henderson Lake Golf Course. It's supposed to be a simple task, but crossing the road has become a daily struggle. Despite the city's assertions that there are enough crossings, I find myself waiting endlessly at the parking lot near Fern Crescent as drivers whiz by, seldom yielding to pedestrians.

This isn't just my problem—it's a concern shared by many others in the community who find the current crossings either inconveniently located or insufficient for the foot traffic in the area. The absence of a nearby crossing puts pedestrians in a precarious position, forcing them to travel out of their way or risk their safety by crossing at the less-than-ideal location near the parking lot.

Previously, I reached out to the city and even spoke to councillors hoping to bring a resolution to this issue. Unfortunately, my requests have fallen on deaf ears. But we cannot ignore the potential risks any longer. The city must recognize the need for an additional pedestrian crossing to ensure our safety and improve our daily routes.

Data from the city's own traffic analysis could be utilized to reassess pedestrian flow and crossing needs. According to a 2020 report on pedestrian safety, roads with inadequate crossings have higher incidents of jaywalking and pedestrian accidents. An additional crossing at South Parkside Drive would not just expedite our crossing but create a safer environment for everyone.

I urge the city of Lethbridge to reconsider this need. Please support this petition to prompt local authorities to implement a sensible solution to this growing concern. Sign the petition to help make South Parkside Drive safer for all of us.
