Install All-Way Stop Sign at 11th Ave and 141st St
The Issue
Every day, I walk through the intersection of 11th Avenue and 141st Street in Whitestone. Whether I’m heading home via car or walking my dog, each time I cross I am struck by how dangerous it is. Despite a posted speed limit of 25 mph, cars routinely speed through at 40–50 mph, creating a constant hazard for pedestrians and drivers alike.
I’ve witnessed near-misses and watched as neighbors, families with children, and even cautious drivers struggle to safely cross this chaotic intersection. The lack of a stop sign gives drivers no reason to slow down, turning what should be a quiet residential crossing into a high-speed danger zone.
It shouldn’t take a tragedy for action to be taken.
An all-way stop sign at this intersection would dramatically improve safety. Studies show that installing stop signs at previously uncontrolled intersections can reduce crashes by up to 45%. Slower speeds save lives. For example, a pedestrian struck at 40 mph faces an 85% chance of being killed, but at 25 mph, that risk drops to around 10-15%. Additionally, stop signs can lower average vehicle speeds on residential streets by 5-10 mph, helping to protect everyone who uses our roads.
Many residents have voiced their concerns but we need our collective voices to be heard by local authorities.
Help make our streets safer before it’s too late. Sign this petition to demand that the NYC Department of Transportation install an all-way stop sign at 11th Avenue and 141st Street. Together, we can protect lives and restore peace of mind to our neighborhood.
