Every day, my daughter, myself, and several other students use the crosswalk in front of Skyview High School to get to the bus stop. While this crosswalk has a flashing yield, cars often ignore it and drive on, disregarding the flashing lights and the people waiting to cross. This dangerous practice has the potential to lead to disastrous consequences and it's a risk we face daily.

Recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlights the urgency of this issue. A quarter of all pedestrian fatalities occur at non-intersection locations like ours. Even more troubling, pedestrian fatalities are rising, with 2019 seeing a 3% increase nationally compared to the previous year (source: NHTSA's Traffic Safety Facts 2019).

It is clear that the current setup is not enough to ensure safe crossing for students and other pedestrians. We need a stoplight crosswalk in front of Skyview High School in Nampa, Idaho. This will not only enhance the safety of our children but also set a precedent for schools nationwide, showing our commitment to the safety of our students. The time to act is now, before we face any potential tragedies.
