The Issue

This busy stretch of the A4130 in Nuffield has been a 40mph area and has seen several fatal accidents and many other incidents and near-misses in recent years  The road is crossed regularly by: walkers along the Ridgeway and local public footpaths; visitors and staff to The Maker Space, Nuffield Place (National Trust property), Huntercombe Nursing Home, HMP Huntercombe; Huntercombe Golf Club; Students and parishioners using the public bus services.

The area concerned is over the brow of Gangsdown Hill between the two sets of village gates along a busy A-road.  The proposed crossing island would ideally be sited between the bus stops, almost opposite each other. Close by there are four road junctions (Timbers Lane to Nuffield village, Huntercombe End Lane to Park Corner, entrance to several residential properties at The Old Club House and Bradley Road). Bradley Road also serves HMP Huntercombe, Nuffield Place (National Trust) and Huntercombe Hall Nursing Home. Also an entrance to Huntercombe Golf Club works area, the Maker Space cafe and several house. All within the village gates area, which is a distance of approx 500m.

This issue is a shared experience of our community members and the Parish Council are advocating for the installation of an island crossing along this stretch. From a safety perspective, island crossings have been proven to significantly reduce pedestrian-vehicle collision incidents by providing a safe haven for pedestrians in the middle of the road (source: National Cooperative Highway Research Program). Plus, they are necessary for the busy A4130, as it will not only ensure pedestrian safety but also manage the fast traffic flow better.

We request the concerned local infrastructure authorities to prioritize pedestrians' safety and well-being. Let's make our everyday journeys less dangerous and more secure by making the roads safer for everyone who uses them. Please sign this petition to show your support for the installation of an island crossing on the A4130 in Nuffield.

Together, we can make a difference!
