The Issue

For my entire life, my heart has been broken over and over watching innocent children and families swept away on holiday weekends at the Guadalupe River with no adequate warning. It's time for change to prevent further heartbreak and loss.

The Guadalupe River, a beloved recreational spot in Texas, has been the scene of recurring tragedies as flash floods unexpectedly claim lives. In 1987, we lost precious children from the Pot O Gold Summer Camp when their school buses were engulfed by a sudden surge of water. In a similar catastrophe in 2013, sleeping families were swept away from their riverside cabins during Memorial Day weekend.

Most recently, in 2025, the river's relentless power claimed the lives of over 100 people, including young girls at Camp Mystic. This recurrent devastation signals an urgent need for a proactive solution that can save lives.

A siren warning system, deployed along the Guadalupe River and triggered by river flood gauges, can serve as a critical alert mechanism, ensuring timely evacuation to safety for all those in the area.

Flash floods are swift and deadly, often occurring with little warning. A siren system could provide the crucial time needed for campers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts to seek shelter and protect themselves from impending danger.

We call upon state and local government officials, as well as relevant agencies, to prioritize the safety of our communities by installing this vital warning system. Funding should be allocated to design and implement a robust flood warning infrastructure along the Guadalupe River that can detect rising water levels and immediately alert those in vulnerable areas.

Let us not wait for another tragedy to strike before we act. By implementing a siren warning system, we can prevent future losses and ensure that the Guadalupe River remains a place of enjoyment rather than sorrow.
