Instagram: Stop disabling innocent accounts that mean no harm, and punish the ones that do

The Issue

Instagram has a history of using a flawed algorithm in order to identify supposedly harmful accounts.

On 28th February, my account @didyoujustsaywig was disabled after a video was removed for Intellectual Copyright Violation, despite the fact I bought the license and had the legal right to post and distribute the footage. The company I obtained the license from has supported this fact.

I share videos online, post my own edits, create my own digital art and communicate with tens of thousands of people in order to grow my audience, something I have been doing for the past 2 years without issue. With Instagram being a social media platform, along with that comes many genuine social contacts gained as a result of having this platform; something that is irreplaceable and hard to come by.

This is not just an isolated occurrence. Many other accounts, creators, influencers, and small businesses have had huge parts of their life and career taken from them due to this deeply flawed system.

But the problem goes deeper... a huge number of accounts remain that post graphic content and explicit material, yet the system turns a blind eye.

Why is Instagram's priority to penalise creators who utilise their platform in the correct manner rather than the people who post out-right gore, death, violence, and pornography?

Instagram: stop penalising innocent accounts and start removing those with the intent to post harmful content.
