Instacart Must Clarify or Remove the Unfair New “Shopping Quality” Rating System

The Issue

We, the undersigned Instacart shoppers, are calling on Instacart to immediately suspend the rollout of the new “Shopping Quality” rating system set to take effect on July 1st, 2025.

This system directly affects our ability to obtain Diamond status — and therefore, access to more and better-paying work — yet Instacart has failed to provide any transparency about:

How this score is calculated
What metrics matter most
What thresholds we must meet
How we can improve our rating
Why customer-initiated refunds or out-of-stock items count against us

Despite contacting support, many of us have received no clear answers, only vague suggestions that “improvement is possible.” With no clear formula or standard, we are being judged and potentially punished for factors outside our control, including:

Store stock availability

Customer behavior and refund requests
System glitches and app errors

We demand:

A full and public explanation of the algorithm used to calculate Shopping Quality.
Transparent thresholds and actionable steps to improve our score.
That Diamond status not be tied to an opaque and unfair system.
A pause or rollback of the current changes until proper communication and training are provided.

 

 


Instacart shoppers are the backbone of this platform — without us, there is no service. It is unacceptable to be evaluated in secret, with our livelihoods hanging in the balance.
