I am an ardent environmentalist personally impacted by the quality of our air. I carry a medical condition, a stark testament to the damages caused by pollution. It is time for universities to strive for more sustainable practices, and Hofstra University could lead that change. I advocate for this institution to initiate the production of biofuel using the campus' food waste, a sustainable and relatively simple solution that could profoundly impact our environment. Currently, Americans produce 38 million tons of food waste each year, and only 5% is diverted for composting (EPA, WSJ). By converting food waste into biofuel, Hofstra University could set a precedent for all academic institutions, further contributing to limiting the pollution in our airspace which could possibly benefit conditions similar to mine.
