Induct matchbox twenty to Rock Hall of Fame in 2026
The Issue
A Petition to John Sykes, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Committee Chair:
On behalf of the millions of Rob Thomas & matchbox twenty fans worldwide, we are respectfully requesting that the band, matchbox twenty be seriously considered for nomination and induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2026 in the category of Performers.
In 1996 matchbox twenty was one of the hottest young bands to emerge out of Florida music scene during the post-grunge movement. When all other bands in the mid 90's seemed to sound moody, dark and depressing, Rob Thomas & matchbox twenty had a sound that rocked! It was catchy yet soulful, but with enough attitude to let the world know they weren't just another "boy band from Orlando".
Having released their debut record, "Yourself or Someone Like You" in 1996, it was a bit of a slow burn, that is until the song, "Push" hit the airwaves. That's when it all started for them. This album went on to sell an impressive 15 millions units to date and releasing four singles: "Push", "Real World, "3AM" and "Back 2 Good".
In 1998, Rob Thomas & Ital Shuur wrote a song called "Smooth" for Carlos Santana's album, "Supernatural". The Latin grooves and Thomas' smooth, sultry voice instantly catapulted the song to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts where it remained for 12 straight weeks. The song also earned both Thomas and Carlos Santana, three Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. It also earned matchbox twenty additional recognition as well.
Of note: as of 2018. "Smooth" is ranked the 2nd most successful song of all time by Billboard Magazine.
Matchbox twenty have been nominated for awards 12 times including Grammys, MTV awards, and American Music Awards. They won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Musical Group in 2004, as well as an APRA Award in Australia for Most Played Foreign Work for their song "All Your Reasons" in 2009.
Throughout their 29 year career together, matchbox twenty have grown & matured as a band. Each member contributing so much to their sound. All five of their studios albums have their own unique sound and style from the previous, yet never fully straying from the signature "matchbox twenty" sound.
The music of matchbox twenty has been the soundtrack to many people's lives.
I am asking my fellow matchbox twenty/Rob Thomas fans, and all fans of great music to sign this petition to help #inductmb20 to the #rockhall2026 for their musical legacy. Thank You.
