Two months have passed since President Joko Widodo announced a temporary reprieve from execution. Advocacy work in cooperation with partners in Indonesia and around the world expresses our vigilance. In a meeting with the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, on June 11, 2015, Church people expressed the demand of the public to be updated on Mary Jane’s case. The Department of Foreign Affairs conceded that they should release regular updates, especially since many are active in supporting Mary Jane as a migrant worker who was duped by drug traffickers. For now, Mary Jane was described as secured by diplomatic friendship between the Philippines and Indonesia as well as the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty between the two countries while the Department of Justice works on the case against Sergio and Lacanilao. At the Indonesian Embassy in Manila, on June 18, 2015, Church people hand-delivered our petition appealing for clemency and pardon for Mary Jane. Articulating our deep appreciation for the temporary reprieve given by President Widodo and asking how we can have Mary Jane removed from death row, the delegation was told, “keep doing what you are doing.” Partnership with Indonesian organizations has translated into on-the-ground advocacy in both Indonesia and the Philippines. Supporters of Mary Jane in the Philippines were especially encouraged to be vigilant on the court proceedings in the Philippines. Hopefully, a resolution from the Department of Justice within the coming weeks will move the legal proceeding against Mary Jane’s alleged illegal recruiters and traffickers Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao into the trial phase. We ask for your continued efforts in sharing this petition with your friends and networks. The growing number of petition supporters is a quantitative expression of the global clamor to #SaveMaryJane. We also encourage organizations and individuals to write personal letters to President Widodo appealing for clemency and pardon for Mary Jane Veloso, victim of human trafficking. We must remain vigilant to #SaveMaryJane. We invite you to a Thanksgiving Mass to be held at Ermita Church in Manila, Philippines at noon, June 29, 2015; please join in prayer and advocacy for Mary Jane.
