On Thursday, August 19, 2015, Maria Cristina (Kristina) Sergio and Julius Lacanilao failed to further postpone their arraignment on the indictment for large-scale illegal recruitment in Mary Jane’s home province. The Church Task Force joined the hearing, sitting behind two of three young women who have completed sworn affidavits (testimony) on how they were also recruited by Sergio’s and Lacanilao’s syndicate. The National Union of Peoples Lawyers(NUPL) representing Mary Jane and the Veloso family also serve as private retained lawyers for the young women in this case. During the hearing, the attention of the Public Attorney’s Office lawyers, representing Sergio and Lacanilao, was called for their over-zealousness in attempting to facilitate one witness in withdrawing her testimony (due to her worry that attending hearings will affect her household’s daily income). Working with the state-appointed fiscal in the prosecution, the NUPL lawyers are encouraging more victims that were identified during the investigation to come forward. The next hearing is scheduled on September 18, 2015. On September 18, arraignment of Sergio and Lacanilao on the indictment for qualified human-trafficking, estafa, and illegal recruitment of Mary Jane will also be conducted. Both cases are now assigned to Branch 37 of the Region Trial Court in Santo Domingo, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Philippine officials traveled to Indonesia to update and dialogue on Mary Jane’s case with Indonesian leaders in the last week of July. Afterwards, Philippine officials reported to news outlets in the Philippines that they are hopeful for Mary Jane in light of the evidence that they were able to deliver in Indonesia and the on-going cooperation in the prosecution of Mary Jane’s accused traffickers. However, the Attorney General’s Office in Indonesia reiterated that Mary Jane’s legal process on her conviction for drug smuggling has already been completed. All the more, our petition for clemency and pardon to President Widodo continues to be a vital action to Save the Life of Mary Jane Veloso. Please continue to share her story and inspire others to sign the petition to #SaveMaryJane.
