Indiana State Schools need to lift the Phone Ban!
The Issue
In today's fast-paced world, communication has become a critical part of our daily lives. For students, being able to use personal electronic devices during break periods at school is not just about staying connected with friends—it’s essential for balancing work, family, and personal responsibilities.
Many high school students, including myself, juggle part-time jobs alongside school commitments. We rely on our personal devices to manage work schedules and stay in touch with employers. Without the ability to check messages or emails during passing periods and lunch, we risk missing crucial updates that can affect our job performance and earnings. Considering that the teenage job market contributes significantly to our economy, addressing this issue has substantial societal benefits. Many past assignments have included cell phone technology.
Additionally, communication with family members during the school day is vital. Parents often need to relay important information or check in on their children's well-being. Restricting access to personal devices increases anxiety for both students and their families, making it difficult to handle emergencies or even simple matters of planning and logistics.
In schools, social workers face an overwhelming number of flagged emails daily concerning absences and tardies. Allowing students to use their devices during non-instructional periods can help address these issues proactively by enabling students to communicate their whereabouts responsibly, thus reducing the load on administrative staff. I want to add that, while teachers have reported fewer distractions in the classrooms, the lack of distraction may just be caused by a lack of attendance. Each day, the detention rooms grow in size from all the tardies and absences that are caused by a lack of contact with the outside world. Along with distractions, adults seem to dismiss the fact that computer games are just as distracting as a cell phone, if not more!
It’s time to embrace the realities of the digital age and adapt our school policies accordingly. We propose permitting supervised use of personal electronic devices during defined break periods such as passing periods and lunch times. This policy adjustment would not interfere with instructional time and would equip students with the tools they need to seamlessly manage their responsibilities. Some schools have already adjusted their policies and are allowing cell phone use during free time or breaks throughout the school day. A way of compromise between students, parents, and schools might just be to ban cell phones in ¨Classroom Use¨ but allow them throughout passing periods or lunch. This way, rules can be set that are fair for all.
Support this petition to urge school administrators to reconsider current policies and allow responsible device usage that aligns with the needs of modern students and their families. Sign now to make this positive change!
