Friends, It has been a while since we've had an easy strategy to help Keith Cooper. But there is something you can do on Thursday and Friday which may have an outsize impact. On Friday evening, the Elkhart County (IN) GOP is meeting in a caucus to select the replacement for Curtis Hill to be the county's next district attorney. Hill's endorsement and the leading candidate for the position is Vicki Becker. It should not go unnoticed that Becker has been representing the state in opposing Keith Cooper's petition for a new trial. Recall that Governor Pence has insisted that Cooper exhaust all legal options before being pardoned. For a number of reasons, including expense to the state, it would have been better for Pence to give Cooper a full pardon. Yet it has also made sense to pursue the legal options. Vicki Becker has opposed every argument in favor of a new trial, which we would contend, on the basis of overwhelming evidence, would result in Cooper's exoneration.
