Friends,
The phone number for the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s office is 574-296-1888.
The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s office has provided us a great “Contact Us” page with an email box, a phone number, and even, if you prefer, a mailing address.
Let’s use their contact information to call upon the lead prosecuting attorney to write a letter to Mike Pence, calling on him to pardon Keith Cooper.
The prosecutor of the original case against Keith Cooper, Michael Christofeno, wrote a letter back in January to Governor Mike Pence, repudiating the 1997 robbery prosecution. This letter was published in the Indianapolis Star on April 26 and was the basis of Friday’s petition update. If Michael Christefeno can admit a mistake and ask Pence to pardon Keith Cooper, then Curtis Hill should follow Christofeno’s example, contacting Pence in support of a pardon.
If you haven’t been following these updates for a while: Curtis Hill made a deal in 2006 that resulted in Keith Cooper remaining, officially, a convicted felon. (See this previous update if you need the details: https://www.change.org/p/indiana-governor-pardon-an-innocent-man/u/17703065.)
I spoke with a person at the Elkhart County prosecutor’s office last week, and she tried to put all of the next step on Pence. In a sense, she’s right—Pence does need to act. But the original blame for Keith Cooper’s problems has to rest on the prosecutor’s office. Michael Christofeno has done his part. It’s time for Curtis Hill to do the same.
So today, please call 574-296-1888. Tell the person who answers that you want to see Keith Cooper get a pardon from Governor Pence, and that Curtis Hill should follow the example of the former Elkhart County deputy prosecutor Christofeno and contact Pence in support of a pardon.
You do not have to be an Indiana resident to call or email. However, if you are, please identify yourself as an Indiana voter interested in the outcome of Keith Cooper’s case. Curtis Hill is running to be Indiana’s next Attorney General. He should have to consider how Keith Cooper’s case will affect his political future.
This would also be a good time to resume calling the governor’s office. A talking point this time is to point out that Pence had been sent the letter by Cooper’s prosecutor Christofeno. If the very prosecutor of the case can recommend the pardon, why won’t Governor Pence pardon him? The number for the office of the governor is 317-232-4567. Or you may try the email box at this link: http://in.gov/gov/2333.htm
For the first callers, the person who answers the phone may be unfamiliar with who Michael Christofeno is. Identify him as the former Elkhart County deputy prosecutor who prosecuted the original 1997 robbery charge against Keith Cooper.
Thank you all for your help with this effort. Post in the comments below how your phone call goes. And, by the way, call again tomorrow too. And Wednesday. After all, we’ve been given the opportunity to contact them.
Cheers, Jack Heller
