Caste-based discrimination at IITs is neither a recent phenomenon nor a rare occurence. Prof Vipin P. Veetil, an Economics Professor at the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at IIT Madras, resigned this week because he faced caste-based discrimination from the institute and his department. His resignation comes two days after the NCSC reprimanded IIT Madras for not hiring enough SC, ST, and OBC professors. Caste-based discrimination in IITs is rampant and unchecked. Veetil, like the petitioners, underscored the urgent need for having permanent SC, ST, and OBC committees at IITs.
