Increase work-related income limits for SSDI beneficiaries
The Issue
- For many years, I have relied on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) to support myself due to my ongoing battle with a permanent disability. While I remain grateful for the financial aid provided by SSDI, there are significant limitations in the current system. The present cap on work-related income is just $1,690 per month, and 2,500based on the last time the limits were adjusted for those who are blind. This restrictive policy hampers our ability to achieve financial independence and improve our living standards.
Imagine facing the costs of medication, specialized equipment, and everyday living essentials on a fixed income that barely covers necessities. Many SSDI recipients, like myself, are eager to engage in meaningful employment and contribute more to society but are held back by these outdated income restrictions. This current cap does not reflect the rising cost of living, healthcare expenses, or the desire and capability many of us have to work and earn more.
Our proposal is to adjust the SSDI work-related income limits to $2,500 per month for the general beneficiaries and $3,500 per month for those who are blind. and or raise the the number of working hours to 25-30 up from 15 or less in some cases This increase would enable more individuals on disability benefits to pursue part-time or occasional work without the fear of losing essential support. This change would empower us to better support ourselves and our families, fostering financial stability and overall well-being.
The adjustments we propose are not just numbers—they represent hope for a better quality of life. It is vital that we move beyond these financial constraints to reflect modern realities and create an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
I urge lawmakers, social security officials, and concerned citizens to understand the profound impact this change would have on individuals and families already navigating the challenges of disability. By increasing these income thresholds, we can promote independence, improve economic security, and reinforce the dignity and morale of those living with disabilities.
Sign this petition to help bring about the change that so many need—a change that reflects fairness and recognizes our potential to contribute positively to society while managing the realities of living with a disability. Let's advocate for a fairer SSDI system that fosters empowerment and independence for all beneficiaries.
it should not be that we get benefits are told to get a job and then cant work or cover someones shift
this petition will also raise the total assets limit from $2,000 to $10,000 wiitch will encourage People to save money and be financially responsible under current rules if you are on SSDI and at any point you have $2,000 or more in your bank account your benefits are now at risk of being cut or lost i think it's wrong that we are punishing people for being financially responsible and trying to save money for a rainy day the limit of $2,000 has been the same sense in todays dollars with inflation the limit should be $10,000 or more
this petition would also protect individuals who receive benefits if they decide to get married after current rules and laws if someone receiving benefits, decided they wanted to get married now their benefits are under attack and often are cut or Denied is important that we get as many names on this as possible so that we can make a change for the better
the limits that are in place now have had a negative impact on me and have resulted in my hours getting cut multiple times witch has resulted in me losing out on potential opportunities to make a little more money by say covering a coworker shift
