Hi Everyone
It's been a few weeks since the last update, but there have been a couple of developments since then.
Squamish Councillor John French has been vocal about the need for change, having been interviewed and published in various publications, referencing this petition and the desire for change that it stems from. The overall goal has been for a chance to meet with Minister of Public Safety Farnsworth at the Union of BC Municipalities meeting in September. The goal is to impress upon him the desire for change on this highway to meet the demand and dangers that arise now. This is a top priority as it is the Province ultimately responsible for this.
Another meeting is being had with West Vancouver over this today (preparing for it as we speak) to attempt to get an official position from them. We are hoping to get the first steps towards an IRSU with the various police jurisdictions, with hopefully West Vancouver leading the charge.
We currently also have the Squamish Chamber of Commerce taking a position on this and coming out in support of change. They understand the economic impacts that shut downs entail. Bravo to them.
Here's the bad news , and I will be blunt. There is ZERO response from the following
- Any authority/group in Pemberton
- Whistler Council referred it to staff at their June meeting, and there has been zero follow up
- Nothing from the Chamber of Commerce
- Squamish Council, aside from Councillor French
- Nothing from West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce
- Nothing from Lions Bay
- Nothing aside from 1 councillor in North Vancouver
- Nothing from any provincial MLA in the corridor
- Nothing from any Member of Parliament in the corridor
- Nothing from any of the First Nations whose lands the highway runs through
I personally find that atrocious and I hope you do to. Citizens concerned about the safety of the ONLY feasible transport route in the region, and no responses.
If you feel this as well, I encourage you to reach out to the contacts at the following links (please copy and paste the petition, or write your own letter referencing this petition
Please reach out AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to show your support
