Increase the Availability of Opioid Replacement Therapy Providers in Victoria, Australia
The issue
Dear Hon. Mary-Anne Thomas, Minister for Health, Victoria, Australia,
We, the undersigned, call for immediate action to address the critical shortage of opioid replacement therapy (ORT) providers in Victoria.
As a lived experience support worker deeply invested in the wellness of individuals battling opioid addiction, I've understood the profound impact of opioid replacement therapy (ORT). I've observed how this treatment can facilitate individuals to rebuild their lives, reconnect with their communities, and reclaim hope. However, the distressing absence of available providers in Victoria as healthcare providers retire or halt these essential services is hindering access to this life-saving treatment.
The issue at hand is not simply about health services, but one that directly impacts the lives of Victorians. Without local access to ORT, many individuals relapse into dangerous drug use, including heroin and fentanyl, putting their health and safety at significant risk. This situation not only jeopardizes the well-being of individuals but also contributes to fractured family relationships, increased crime, and further social instability.
We urge the Victorian government and relevant health authorities to take urgent steps to expand the availability of opioid replacement therapy providers across the state. This includes incentivizing new providers to enter the field, supporting existing providers, and ensuring that services are accessible to all individuals who need them.
We must envision a future where freedom from addiction is attainable.
