Traffic congestion is a daily nuisance for many drivers in Virginia. Often, we find ourselves stuck in heavy traffic because of slow drivers, exacerbating our already long commutes. Driving through Virginia highways can be frustrating as the current speed limits do not cater to the practical needs of efficient travel.

States with higher speed limits have successfully managed highway traffic without compromising safety, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Safety does not have to be sacrificed when speed limits are carefully studied and adjusted. European countries such as Germany have already demonstrated how controlled speed limits can coexist with heightened traffic safety. It’s time for Virginia to reconsider its current speed limit policies and align them more closely with real-world driving conditions.

Let’s urge the Virginia Department of Transportation to conduct a thorough review of our highways and consider increasing speed limits where appropriate. This change could make our daily commutes less stressful, more efficient, and improve the quality of life for countless drivers across the Commonwealth.
