Increase Social Security Benefits and Minimum Wage to Ensure a Living Wage for All

Increase Social Security Benefits and Minimum Wage to Ensure a Living Wage for All
The Issue
I am writing this petition as an advocate for recipients of Social Security and minimum wage workers, many of whom are struggling to maintain a basic quality of life. 72,352 individuals (source: SSA) and 1.0 million workers at or below minimum wage (source: BLS.gov), due to various circumstances, rely on these sources for their income. However, the current benefits and wages are barely enough to cover bare necessities let alone ensure a comfortable living.
In 2024, the average monthly Social Security benefit was only around $1,778 (source: SSA). The federal minimum wage is $7.25. When compared with a "living wage" of $22.13 per hour for a single person with no children (source: MIT), it's clear that these benefits fall woefully short. That translates into an annual income of around $46,030 for a full-time worker, which is significantly higher than the $21,336 the average beneficiary receives, and the $15,080 for a full-time minimum wage worker. It should be noted that, as of 2024, the federal poverty guideline for a single-person household is $15,060.
Increases in Social Security benefits and minimum wage are not only a matter of dignity and justice for our most vulnerable citizens, but also a smart economic policy. Research suggests that every dollar invested in Social Security generates about two dollars in economic output (source: Economic Policy Institute).
Therefore, we call upon policymakers to review and take immediate actions towards increasing Social Security benefits and minimum wage to a level that ensures a living wage. Let us create a system that truly secures the well-being of our people. Please, sign this petition to uphold the rights and well-being of our fellow citizens.
