I am one among many who suffer the brutal hardships of homelessness in the province of Ontario. Relying on the meager shelter space available, we call every 3-4 hours only to be informed that there's no room for us. It seems our government would rather see us on the streets than in affordable housing. Sleep is a fleeting luxury when the wind cuts through you on the cold streets where you're unsheltered and exposed. This is my situation, but I am not alone - there are many more like me. In 2016 alone, an estimated 235,000 Canadians experienced homelessness, and Ontario has one of the highest rates in the country. Our government needs to take responsible measures to address this crisis. We need a significant increase in shelter space, better funded support services, and initiatives for affordable housing. Homelessness should not be ignored or seen as inevitable; it is a societal issue that can and must be addressed. Our lives, dignity, and ability to contribute to our communities depend on it.
